Battery electric vehicles emit no gases at the tailpipe so the 500e scores maximum points in this part of the assessment.

Our verdict

First shown at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show, the FIAT 500e has been a high-selling supermini ever since. The pure electric version tested here has a 87 kW, 220 Nm permanent-magnet, three-phase synchronous-drive electric motor and a 42.0 kWh battery. Like all pure electric vehicles, there are no tailpipe emissions so the car scores maximum points in the Clean Air Index and the Greenhouse Gas Index. Energy efficiency is also excellent compared with combustion-engined cars but unexceptional compared to other electric vehicles. Nevertheless, the 500e fully deserves its maximum 5 star rating.
