Our verdict

The VW Golf tested here is equipped with a 2‑litre diesel engine. The powertrain is not supported by any electrification, limiting the car's performance in Green NCAP's tests.

  • Controls exhaust emissions effectively under all test conditions and achieves a high Clean Air score. Scores well for tyre abrasion but cannot reduce brake abrasion due to the lack of regenerative braking.
  • Delivers impressive diesel consumption values. The Energy Efficiency Index benefits from relatively low production emissions and the low consumption values.
  • Keeps non-usage phase emissions low and delivers total life cycle emissions to 193 g CO2‑eq./km, resulting in a creditable GHG score for a conventional powertrain car.

7.1 10 Clean Air

The diesel Golf controls its exhaust emissions very well and robustly across all tests, including the winter cold start test and in the high-power demand Highway Test. None of the pollutant species require special attention, the performance is balanced and solid and lead to a high score. The points collected for limiting tyre abrasion emissions are above average. However, the conventional powertrain is not capable of recuperative braking and no points are awarded for brake abrasion mitigation.

8.2 10 Energy Efficiency

The car's low diesel consumption figures are noteworthy and vary between 4 and just 5.3 l/100 km under various conditions in the lab. The real-world on-road drive recorded a truly impressive 3.9 l/100 km with 4.9 l/100 km in the short urban trip. In terms of life cycle assessment, the total primary energy demand benefits from the absence of a heavy battery, the production of which would increase the need for energy.

5.6 10 Greenhouse Gases

Although the non-usage LCA phases of a conventional vehicle emit less greenhouse gases than an electric car, the combustion of the fossil fuel increases the emissions. However, thanks to the low diesel consumption of the Golf, the results are still creditable for a conventional car and help reach an index score of 5.6/10. The calculated total amount of life cycle greenhouse gas emissions is 193 g CO2‑eq./km.

Green NCAP comments

The Driving Experience evaluation of conventional vehicles focuses only on the performance in the section 'Consumption and Range'. The Golf's estimated real-world consumption figures are seen as good in all conditions – warm weather and cold winter, urban, rural, highway and mixed driving scenarios. The consumption readings on the computer display board are accurate.
