Introducing SEA LCA

The Sino-European Automotive Carbon Footprint Mutual Recognition Research Working Group or SEA LCA was established in December 2024 by Green NCAP and the China Automotive Carbon Digital Technology Center Co., Ltd. Dedicated to promoting coordinated development and mutual recognition in the field of automotive Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) between China and Europe, it brings together leading research institutions, technical platforms, and major automotive manufacturers from both regions. Current members include Green NCAP, CATARC, DEKRA, IDIADA, Chery, Changan, and NIO.

SEA LCA introduces the innovative mechanism of single calculation, multiple recognition, to carry out in-depth technical alignment on LCA based on real vehicle cases. Key topics such as methodological alignment, mutual trust in background data, and verification are at the centre of the cooperation, aiming to build a unified, transparent, and internationally applicable mutual recognition framework for automotive carbon footprints.

Guidelines

Guidelines for Sino-European Automotive Carbon Footprint Accounting, Verification, and Mutual Recognition v1.0 address common challenges such as duplicated calculations, divergent standards, and the high compliance costs faced by businesses. Introducing a unified technical framework that covers accounting, verification, and mutual recognition, the collaboration aims to improve transparency and methodological coherence in carbon footprint management between both regions.

The Guidelines are in compliance with international standards including ISO 14040/44 and based on ISO 14064-3, ISO 14067 and ISO 14071, also integrate the practical experience of CPP, CATARC and Green NCAP to form a harmonized path for passenger vehicle assessment.

The Guidelines serve as a technical reference for OEMs, third-party verifiers, and stakeholders in both China and Europe. Going forward, Sino-Euro Automotive LCA will continue to expand the application scope and strengthen this mechanism, contributing to a globally trusted, transparent, and interoperable green rule system.

Mutually recognized models

Before the publication of its very first official LCA Report, the SEA LCA evaluated two pilot-project electric vehicles. The Assessments of the Deepal S05 and NIO Firefly were kindly supported by their vehicle manufacturers, and the collected experience paved the way to the official release of Omoda Jaecoo 7 SHS life cycle assessment report.

Please note, the calculations consider vehicle usage in Europe.
