The 96 kW diesel version of the diesel Opel Astra 1.5 CDTI impressively demonstrates what is possible with adequate modern exhaust aftertreatment and is awarded a creditable result of 7.9 points in the Clean Air Index. All measured pollutants are low, even in the Highway Test, and the vehicle convinces with excellent particle emission values, although it is fair to say that this is not surprising for modern diesel cars. NOx emissions are kept very low in most cases, but come close to the upper threshold in the 8 km cold start Short Urban Trip on the road.

Comments

The Astra makes only mediocre use of the powertrain efficiency potential of the diesel engine combined with an 8-speed automatic transmission. In the Cold and Warm Lab Tests consumption values of 5.6 and 5.3 l/100 km, respectively, are measured. The real world On-Road Drive used 5.2 l/100 km and the Highway Test needs 6.6 l/100 km. The Short Urban Trip used a surprisingly high 8 l/100 km.

Comments

The Greenhouse Gas Index is based on a Well-to-Wheel+ approach. While methane is not of a concern for this powertrain type, the score would benefit from a reduction of the non-regulated laughing gas (N2O). In the standard Cold Lab Test 148 g CO2/km are measured at the tailpipe, more than the officially declared figure of 128 g/km. With the addition of some 27 g/km from diesel production and supply, the total CO2‑equivalent emissions rise to 180 g/km. In the Highway Test the total figure is 206 g CO2‑eq./km. Reduction of fuel consumption is needed to improve the performance in this index.

Our verdict

Tested here is the 2023 model of the diesel Opel Astra 1.5 CDTI with 8-speed automatic transmission and a power of 96 kW. The 1.5‑litre diesel engine and its exhaust aftertreatment system shine with very low pollutant emissions. However, fuel consumption values of this compact hatchback fail to impress and were expected to be lower. The performance of the state-of-the-art exhaust aftertreatment system remained robust and effective under all test conditions but additional improvements are still possible, especially with focus on short trips with cold engine start. The relatively high greenhouse gas emissions cap the overall result, positioning the diesel Opel Astra 1.5 CDTI in the creditable range of 3 Green Stars with an Average Score of 51%.
