Comments

Despite being equipped with a particle filter, the Touran 1.5 TSI scored only about a third of the possible points for particle emissions. Points are deducted in some laboratory tests for exceeding the NH3 emission threshold, too. However, CO emissions are managed quite well. On the plus side, as is typical for modern petrol powertrains, NOx emissions are low and almost non-existent in the On-Road Drive, demonstrating very good performance in the lab as well as on the road.

The VW Touran is a relatively big car with large frontal surface, which leads to more aerodynamic drag at higher speeds. With 3.9 points out of 10, the performance in this index is below average. Both the Warm and Cold WLTC+ laboratory tests consume about 6.7 l/100 km, rising to 8.3 l/100 km in the challenging Highway Test. The standard On-Road Drive used 6.1 l/100 km but, in the first 8 km after the test's cold powertrain start (Short Urban Trip), the consumption reached 7.8 l/ 100 km.

Comments

The Greenhouse Gas Index is based on a Well-to-Wheel+ approach, meaning that the greenhouse gas emissions related to the supply of energy are added to the tailpipe emissions. In the WLTC+ Lab Tests, about 151 g CO2/km were measured at the tailpipe. With the addition of some 39 g/km from fuel production and supply, the total CO2‑equivalent emissions rise to approx. 190 g/km. In the Highway Test the total figure is 235 g CO2‑eq./km, due to higher fuel consumption. The other greenhouse gases - laughing gas (N2O) and methane - are controlled very well and the car scores bonus points.

Our verdict

August 2023: The result of this car been updated. Previously reported Ammonia (NH3) values were incorrect owing to a technical error with the equipment at the test laboratory and a correction has been applied.
The Volkswagen Touran is a very practical and family-friendly hatchback equipped with a 1.5 TSI turbo charged petrol engine. Better particle and ammonia control would definitely help the car earn more points in the Clean Air Index. The vehicle's body shape and mass lead to higher aerodynamic drag, which, in combination with a petrol powertrain, increases the fuel consumption. In general, consumption figures of 6 to7 l/100 km can be expected, while in the Highway Test the value reached 8.3 l/100 km. The 8 km Short Urban Trip used 7.8 l/100 km. Due to the relatively high consumption values and the greenhouse gas emissions from petrol production and supply, the Touran scores poorly in the Greenhouse Gas Index – 2.1 out of 10 points. Overall, the Volkswagen Touran 1.5 TSI receives a Weighted Overall Rating of 4 and 2½ Green Stars.
